About English Language

English language is an Anglo-Frisian language which was brought to Britain in the 5th Century AD from various parts of northwest Germany by Germanic settlers. Two successive waves of invasion by Scandinavian branch of the Germanic family in the 8th and 9th century and the Normans in the 11th century had influenced the original English language.

The English language changed into Modern English from the late 15th century with the Great Vowel Shift. English language has the largest vocabulary of any language in the world as it is continuously assimilating foreign words, especially from Latin and Greek languages.

The first significant English dictionary was published in 1755 by Samuel Johnson.

English is the dominant language in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, the United States and other former British colonies. With an estimated 380 million native English speakers and 300 million who use English as a second language and a further 100 million use it as a foreign language, it has become the second most spoken language in the world.

More than 45 countries have listed the English Language as the official or co-official language and is spoken extensively in other countries where it has no official status.
